What a Difference a Year Makes...

Today we are celebrating THREE YEARS as husband and wife...really?!  & what a difference a year makes.  Last year when Jake and I were on our anniversary vacation in Nashville, we were walking around on Broadway one night popping into bars here and there and stopped in at a piano bar.  There was a blank song request paper on our table, and since it was so loud that we couldn't really hear and talk to each other, we started writing.

We wrote down a wish... "Here's to hoping that next year on our 3rd anniversary we will be a family of 3..."

Little did we know, we would find out that we were pregnant just days later.

And here we are.  Our little family of 3.

It's been a wild year that I don't really think you can prepare for, no matter how ready you think you are to have a child.  But we wouldn't have it any other way :)

[and yes, I still have that paper!]

Ryleigh's Birth Story :)

Well, it's been a while since my last post because we have been busy with a newborn!  We made it to 38 weeks and 4 days, and Ryleigh Marie was born on Friday, February 14th!

We had a huge [by Southern standards] snow & ice storm that week, and my office was closed Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.  I slept in a little, woke up around 9:30am, and was hanging out with the dogs while eating my breakfast and relaxing.  I felt just sort of "off" all morning.  I thought maybe the Braxton Hicks contractions were throwing me off, or maybe since I just woke up I didn't eat enough and my stomach still felt empty.

Over the next couple of hours, that feeling didn't go away, and I decided maybe a shower would help.  I was also planning to make a trip to Walmart afterwards to get some dog food and other necessities.  By the time I got out of the shower, I was feeling really crampy and decided I just wanted to lay down and take a nap.  I woke up around 1:15 and when I didn't feel much better I just stayed in bed and watched TV.  Well, by 2pm these pains were coming much more frequently and I thought maybe I should take out my phone and use my Contraction Tracker app.  I still wasn't sure if this was labor, but I wanted to start timing to see if maybe this was contractions.  They were all over the place, 4 minutes then 8 minutes then 2 minutes then 11 minutes then 6 minutes...Which threw me off because in child birth class they made me think that contractions would be at more regular intervals.  I watched TV and tracked them until a little after 3pm and I decided I needed to call my doctor's office.  I spoke to the on-call nurse [offices were closed because of the storm] and she said it sounded like the beginnings of labor and to keep tracking for another hour and call her back if there were any changes or if they were more consistent and frequent.  As we hung up the phone she said "Well honey, it's Valentine's day AND a full moon tonight, and you know we believe in those types of things! I think you may be having this baby before the end of the weekend."  Over the next hour I kept tracking and they were still at all different intervals, but those intervals were all 6 minutes or less.  I called Jake around 4 and told him to try to finish up working, make sure everything was ready for work tomorrow, and come home because we might need to go to the hospital.  He finished up quickly and got home around 5pm.  At this point I was finally mostly convinced I was having real contractions [you have to understand that I didn't want to be that first time mom who shows up at the hospital for false alarms that are just gas pains, and I really didn't think she would come that early].  Jake showered and we were going to quick install the car seat, which was on our to-do list for the weekend and we hadn't gotten to it yet, but by the time he got out of the shower the contractions were more frequent and getting much more painful.  We quick finished packing Jake's and the baby's hospital bags, got my bag, and grabbed the uninstalled car seat to head to the hospital.  We knew that all the security guards at the hospital were certified to install car seats so they could help Jake if he needed it before we came home.

Still tracking, the contractions finally became regular intervals of 3 minutes apart while we were on our way up the interstate to the hospital.  I was in a lot of pain by this point...there may have been some yelling, cursing [which I kept apologizing to Jake for because I felt like I shouldn't be cursing because our baby was causing the pain...haha!] and hitting the inside of the car door.  My sweet, sweet husband was trying to help me and told me to remember the breathing techniques from child birth class....to which I told him "I love you and I know you don't want to see me in pain, but please stop now!" We made it to the hospital in about 35 minutes.  I don't want to know how fast Jake was driving because it's a 40 minute drive without road construction delays or traffic.  We were headed there during rush hour on a Friday....

We got to the hospital at 6:35pm and I could barely walk or stand during contractions.  I kept telling people I was in labor and just wanted an epidural.  We were standing at the nurses station checking in at the maternity ward, and I just remember being aggravated because I had pre-registered and I didn't understand why the girl kept asking me all of these questions like my name, birth date, social security number, address, etc.  After what seemed like an eternity they got me into a room, took a urine sample, and started hooking up the contraction and fetal heart rate monitors to my belly.  I kept asking for an epidural, and once the nurse saw that I was having real contractions she checked to see how dilated I was, to which we found out I was already at 9cm.  That was the first total shock moment for everyone because we realized this baby was going to be born soon...At some point the OB showed up--not my normal doctor but a different one from my practice whom I had met before and I remember being relieved that it was her because I liked her a lot.  They broke my water since it still hadn't.  I am forever grateful to the wonderful anesthesiologist because I was told it was up to his discretion for whether or not he would give me the epidural since my urine test results weren't back yet.  Bless that man because he said he understood that sometimes we just needed to do these things, and he turned me on my side while I was laying down and gave me the epidural.  That took about 15 minutes to totally kick in.  The baby wasn't handling the epidural well and her heart rate started to drop.  The gave me an oxygen mask because it was the quickest way to get her more oxygen, and they had me turn to the side.  Those tricks seemed to work because her heart rate went back up to normal.  They checked me and I was 10cm so we were ready to start pushing.  The next contraction came and I pushed three times, and then baby's heart rate started dropping again.  We agreed to let them use the vaccuum to try to help her out quicker, and got ready to push for the next contraction.  They tried the vaccuum but it popped off right away, and while I was pushing 3 more times my nurse asked me to try to get a forth push because the baby would be out.  I did, and she was!

Ryleigh Marie was born at 8:14pm on Valentine's day :)  Jake and I were both in such shock that she had arrived so quickly, and we were both just in awe looking at her.  It was so surreal.  They laid her on my belly to clean her off and we were both holding her, then Jake went over with the nurses to weigh, measure, and be with her while they were doing all of their testing and getting her under the heat lamp.  Her temperature was low, and kept hovering at 97 degrees, so she got an extra long stay under the heat lamps until her temp was finally up to 98 degrees.  Jake stayed with her for that and then they brought her over to me to do skin-to-skin on my chest.  All we could do was kiss her and stare at her, and couldn't believe that she was finally here!

37 Weeks....Baby is Full Term!

This past weekend Jake and I had maternity pictures taken by the very talented Griffin Poulter Photography [GPP facebook page] and I must admit I'm a little obsessed with them.  I was so nervous going into Saturday of how they would turn out--would the lighting in our nursery come out right, would the room be too small to get good shots, would the weather hold out since it was calling for rain, would I feel pretty or feel like a blimp?  I could not be happier with not only the final product, but also with our whole experience!  Griffin was very thorough, making sure to get all of the shots that we wanted [from posing/style ideas found on pinterest] as well as making some suggestions of her own.  Looking at these pictures makes me so excited to welcome our little girl :)

Best baby moment this week:  Seeing our maternity pictures!

Have you told family and friends: Yes

Miss Anything?  Sleeping through the night.  Moving quickly.

Movement: Little baby feet in my ribs...rolling around in there...

Food cravings: Granny Smith apples w/peanut butter! Lots of fruit.

Anything making you queasy or sickNot really

Have you started to show yetoh yes

Gender: girl- Ryleigh Marie :)

Labor Signs: Found out at my appointment this week that some changes are already happening...which doesn't necessarily mean I'm about to go into labor, but hopefully this will make the labor process a little quicker/easier when it does happen...Definitely a reality check though!  I can't believe that my due date is less than 3 weeks away.....

Belly Button in or out?  Half & half?

33 WEEKS!

How far along?  33 weeks, 3 days

Total weight gain/loss: +26.5 lbs

Maternity clothes? All the time!  and realizing that I need to start investing in some comfy lounge nursing/post-partum clothing because I don't have much and I don't want to live in my pj's while on maternity leave!

Sleep: blah.  Let's say we've hit that uncomfortable stage and sleep isn't going so great.  Thankfully I'm not having to deal with insomnia and I can still fall asleep, it's just that it's hard to find a comfortable position to lay in, and any type of rolling over/adjusting my maternity body pillow/having to get out of bed to pee takes a lot of effort.

Best baby moment this week:  Receiving some baby gifts and things I've ordered in the mail!  We received the sweetest set of outfits from a family friend of Jake's, and I already have ideas that one of the outfits would be perfect for her to wear for her baptism :)  We also got in the vinyl decal of her name to go over the crib and I can't wait to get it up on the wall!!

Have you told family and friends: Yes

Miss Anything?  Being able touch my toes.  This may seem silly or random at first, but just think about how many things are more difficult to do when you don't have that range of motion.  Put on a sock, put on pants & underwear, tie shoes, paint my own toenails, pick up anything that I drop on the ground, etc.....

Movement: Still lots.  I've read that it may decrease just a little because she has a longer sleep cycle now, but I feel her strong little kicks, rolls, and other kung-fu movements all day long!

Food cravings: Still pasta, chocolate milk, and juice!  Loving fruit in any form--fresh, juice, frozen yogurt flavors, or covered in chocolate..haha

Anything making you queasy or sickNot really

Have you started to show yetOh yes :)  belly bump is measuring right on track at 34cm/34 weeks [I've been measuring 4 days ahead almost my whole pregnancy]

Gender: GIRL!

Labor Signs: just some Braxton Hicks contractions...I've been wondering if I've been feeling them for a couple of weeks but now they are stronger so I know it's them...no signs of real labor yet though, and hopefully not for at least another month!

Belly Button in or out?  I'd say that's somewhat debatable.

Wedding rings on or off? On, but some days it's a little snug.

Happy or Moody most of the time:  Happy/tired.  I do get emotional over sad/sweet things.

Looking forward to: My baby shower tomorrow!!  I can't wait to see everyone and all my friends who live out of town.  Receiving baby gifts is also pretty much better than Christmas, because everything is either mini-sized and super adorable, or it makes you think about how you will be using it for your baby so you get all happy and sentimental.

We are also touring the hospital this Sunday so I'm really excited to see what it's like!

Also, since I haven't posted about them in a while...say hello to these sassy little studs:
...and I guess I should say that we've made progress!  Reece finally knows that I'm pregnant! haha..or at least he knows that something is different.  It only took my big ol' 7-month baby bump to get the point across.  Kona has been so intuitive and protective of me [even more than his usual..such a momma's boy] the entire time that Jake and I swear he knew that I was pregnant even before we did.  Reece on the other hand, did not.  He would still try to jump up on me and when we would cuddle on the sofa he would move his head all around trying to "adjust" his pillow [aka..baby bump] and would get frustrated when he couldn't.  Well, now he's much more careful around me and very mindful of my belly.  So cute and funny to see how they act, and I know they will be sweet and protective of little miss Ryleigh!

Did You Know?

This post is just to share some information with fellow mommas & mommas-to-be....so I'm sorry to anyone else who finds it boring or irrelevant!

Mommas--did you know that most baby stores have text coupons & deal alerts?  Buy Buy Baby advertises theirs a lot, but other stores do the same thing!  I had no idea that you can get baby-specific deals from Target (so you don't have to weed through all of the other categories on the Cartwheel app)....

So, here are the ones I'm subscribed to and find useful:

Baby Bargin!

Today thanks to Frugal Coupon Living, one of the deal blogs I follow, we scored a great deal on our baby monitor for little one!

I was checking the blog updates and saw that Kohl's had a great deal on the Motorola 2.8" Wireless Baby Video Monitor that we are registered for at Target.  Here's the breakdown:

Original Price:           $229.99
Kohl's Sale Price:      $189.99   [Target Sale Price is currently $179.99]

Coupon: BABYLOVE20 saved $38
Coupon: LUCKY15OFF saved $23

AND:
Kohls.com on orders of $75 or more = Free Standard Shipping!
Earn $10 Kohls Cash on every $50 spent:  $20 Kohls Cash earned

So, our baby monitor is originally $229.99, and with sales tax I paid $138.23.  With the Kohls Cash that we will receive, that's like getting our monitor for $118, over $100 in savings :)

**Other Mommas:  The Frugal Coupon posting is from yesterday and says to stack the coupons BABYLOVE20 and HAPPY2014, however today HAPPY2014 did not work for me.  I found LUCKY15OFF and that worked like a charm for the same discount!

Gotta love a great deal! Plus, we just received a card for our baby shower gift from my grandparents who live out of town, and used that money towards this purchase.  I love to keep track of what we purchase with gift cards or monetary gifts, because we can let those people know what they helped us get for Ryleigh and how useful/helpful it will be!  Especially with having a lot of far-away relatives, it makes it more fun since they can't experience the actual baby shower.

The countdown is getting real....

Look for another "bumpdate" later this week after my 33 week appointment on Friday :)

31 Weeks!

Not the best picture, but it was the only one we got on Christmas day!

How far along?  31 weeks, 2 days

Total weight gain/loss: +23lbs...darn those Christmas cookies! haha but really things seem to be on track and my OB is happy with where we're at so far....

Maternity clothes? All the time!  Now I'm also trying to focus on nursing clothing and taking that into account when/if I purchase any clothing.

Sleep: Seems to be okay...getting tired and taking some weekend or evening naps here and there.  I've gotten a few leg cramps in the middle of the night which is not fun.  I'm having a little more back/hip pain as this bump gets bigger and bigger so sometimes it's difficult to figure out a way to lay that is comfortable.

Best baby moment this week:  Several!  Jake and I went to childbirth class on Saturday and learned lots about preparing for the exciting, yet dreaded, childbirth.  I have to admit that it pretty much scares the mess out of me.  But, I'm now feeling super informed and finding some confidence in myself and the choices that Jake and I will make for bringing our daughter into this world.  We had a great instructor and both really liked the class.

On our way home from class, we bought little one's crib mattress!  Selecting one seems overwhelming and impossible to do with all of the choices available, but I did some research and we settled on the Lullaby Earth Stage 2 crib mattress from Buy Buy Baby [thank you 20% off BBB coupon!].  It's a huge matter of personal preference, but the important aspects came down to organic materials, firmness/support, and it's waterproof so it will be easy to clean and hold up well.

Also all the love and Christmas gifts for Ryleigh :)  She's already one lucky little girl.  She got some outfits and pj's, bedtime prayer board book, squeeze/teethe blocks, and two handmade quilts!  I had to hold myself together when I opened up the beautiful quilt from my friend Shanti, which she also had embroidered with Ryleigh's name and it has the softest minky fabric back.  That will keep her warm next winter for sure!

Have you told family and friends: Yes

Miss Anything?  Being able to sit down and get up quickly...being able to get dressed quickly...being able to do anything quickly...haha

Movement: lots, especially around meal times or after 7:30pm.  Night owl!

Food cravings: Still pasta, chocolate milk, and juice!  Trying out some out-of-the-ordinary flavors but not necessarily weird--like Hawaiian pizza.

Anything making you queasy or sickNot really

Have you started to show yetOh yes :)  belly bump is measuring right on track at 32cm/32 weeks [I've been measuring 4 days ahead for a while now]

Gender: GIRL!

Labor Signs: No, hopefully not until sometime in February!

Belly Button in or out?  In, but getting pretty shallow.

Wedding rings on or off? On, but some days it's a little snug.

Happy or Moody most of the time:  Happy/tired.  I do get emotional over sad/sweet things.

Looking forward to: More nursery progress, and celebrating on New Year's Eve--closing out one pretty great year and looking forward to 2014 because I know it will be even better!  Also our maternity pictures and baby shower coming up in a few weeks!
